As a field hockey athlete it takes more than working on skill to take your game to the next level. It takes being the strongest, fastest, and most explosive athlete you can be to reach your goals. Whether your aim is to make Varsity, get recruited to play in college, or to simply improve you should definitely consider training one or all of the below!
Speed: You will need this for dribbling the ball on a break away, sprinting to get to post, or chasing down the opponent when you make a recovery run. Training for speed is a must for field hockey athletes.
Agility: You are training to improve not only your change of direction, but to do so in reaction to the situation around you. Field hockey athletes must be able to make cuts at a moment's notice or to mirror footwork of their attacker while playing defense. Improving your agility will improve your game all over the field.
Plyometrics: This imperative for field hockey players as shots on goal, passes, saves as a goalkeeper all require a large amount of power in order to be successful. Plyometrics work on applying the maximum amount of force in the shortest period of time, increasing your power output. Utilizing plyometric training will make you explosive throughout games and practices.
Strength: Strengthening muscles such as your quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, and core can assist in getting a harder hit, push, sweep as well as allowing you to hold your own when the game gets a little physical. Strength can also play a huge role in avoiding injuries throughout your career. Implementing strength training into your routine will go a long way in achieving your goals.
These programs can be completely online, in person, individual or in groups. More importantly these programs are designed to assist you with your specific goals!
